What is AHA? (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
AHA is a group of water-soluble acids derived from fruits and milk. Common AHAs include glycolic acid and lactic acid. They are known for their exfoliating properties, helping to remove dead skin cells, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. AHAs are suitable for dry and sun-damaged skin but can sometimes cause sensitivity to sunlight.
What is BHA? (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
BHA, specifically salicylic acid, is oil-soluble and is excellent for unclogging pores and treating acne-prone skin. It can penetrate deeper into the skin, making it effective at exfoliating within the pores, reducing blackheads and whiteheads, and calming inflammation. BHA is ideal for oily and acne-prone skin types.
What is PHA? (Polyhydroxy Acid)
PHA is a newer generation of chemical exfoliants that are milder than AHAs and BHAs. They provide gentle exfoliation, making them suitable for sensitive skin types. PHAs, such as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, also have antioxidant properties and can help improve skin hydration and texture.
How to Use AHA, BHA, and PHA?
If you're new to exfoliants, begin with a lower concentration to allow your skin to adapt. Over time, you can increase the strength if needed. Always perform a patch test to check for any adverse reactions or sensitivity.
Use exfoliants as recommended; typically, a few times a week is sufficient. AHAs and BHAs can increase sun sensitivity, so apply sunscreen in the morning.
Adhere to the specific product's instructions, whether it's a cleanser, toner, serum, or mask. Some are meant to be rinsed off, while others should be left on the skin.
After applying exfoliants, follow up with a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and healthy.
Listen to Your Skin
Pay attention to how your skin reacts. If you experience excessive dryness, redness, or irritation, reduce the frequency of use or switch to a milder formula. Consulting a dermatologist can be helpful for personalized recommendations.
